Sony’s released a new PS5 commercial which boldly declares the best time to get a console is now. The ad – which covers the whole brand but hinges heavily on first-party giga-seller Helldivers 2 – touches upon topics such as PS Portal, customisable covers (which won’t fit PS5 Pro), and the various accessories available for the console.
In our opinion, it’s a little odd how this commercial exists to illustrate why you should buy the console, but instead goes on to promote the dozens of optional peripherals you can purchase alongside it instead.
To be fair, while the YouTube comments are absolutely bursting with people bemoaning a lack of software, it’s been a huge year for games on PlayStation. While not everything available has been an out-and-out exclusive – that’s just a sign of the times, folks – there’s been no shortage of things to play between the likes of Astro Bot, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Silent Hill 2, and Metaphor ReFantazio.
So we do agree, there’s never been a better time to buy a PS5 – it’s just a shame the global economic environment has made it virtually impossible to bring the price of the actual box down.

I mean PS5 has the largest and most impressive catalogue of great games of any console ever. Partly because it has so many generations of amazing games playable on it
The best time to buy it, insanely, was at launch when it was cheapest and had the highest hopes of quality and quantity software.
Instead, because it's just the world we live in now, it's more expensive to buy NOW and the software illusion isn't holding.
Though if you bought it at launch you'd have bought the original headset that doesn't support PlayStations new proprietary connection on the newer more expensive version that only two devices known to man seem to use, your optional disc drives and cover plates that don't work on a £700 system because the notches are in a different place simply to sell more.
But on the other hand, late stage capitalism baybeeeeee
I think there has never been a better time to buy a PS4. Cheap as chips, plays 90% of what is on PS5, and has several features that its younger brother does not.
"it’s a little odd how this commercial exists to illustrate why you should buy the console, but instead goes on to promote the dozens of optional peripherals you can purchase alongside it instead."
Peripherals is where the real money is, that's why consoles used to be loss- leaders at best.
This has been the best year of gaming since 2020 in my opinion. Sorry to those who can't enjoy the amount of bangers we've received this year.
Who needs a PS5 for Fortnite, FC and CoD Blops 6?
I'm hoping the PS5 slim gets a discount during Black Friday,
@Jayslow Any year that has Concord in it AKA one of the biggest failures since ET for the Atari cannot claim to be any kind of ''best year in gaming''.
4 years after launch is now is the time to buy it…lol
@LifeGirl why? I didn't play Concord like most people. It has zero effect on all the games people CAN play which was the whole point of the article. I love me a good Concord dunk but this was a reach.
One exclusive game - Returnal - worth mentioning, and that is years ago. Yes, greatest time.
I got mine about 4 weeks ago and there lots of decent PS5 games to play now.
I agree with Sony 👍
Cringey ad, but I actually did just pick up a PS5 slim during that $50 off sale earlier this month.
@Jayslow Because - and this is key - it is the biggest failure of all time. ''The Greatest year in gaming since 2020 - which also contains the worst game ever made by the hand of man'' is a pretty big asterix next to your claim.
Oh, and I also forgot to mention, ''contains Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League'' in my earlier comment.
With what bundled in? Live service garbage or Horizon remaster who’s the master? For £60.
I’ve always been Sony since day 1 but this gen is a joke.
Actions speak louder than words. If Sony wants to demonstrate that now is the best time to buy a PS5, they have to show off an impressive slate of upcoming software.
I don't entirely mind the more peace-meal approach they've taken to announcing their games, but it doesn't scream 'Big things around the corner' in the same way their large, announcement-stuffed showcases of the PS4 era did.
If you are new to PS5 then yes there is a good back catalogue of games.
Also in the UK there is £50 of the rrp at the minute.
@AK4tywill 100% it’s a trick with a maybe treat. I love Sony but it’s the worst gen ever and the brand feels cold, stale. Just fleecing customers for remasters and £800 mid console. Mid being the word.
That’s was an extremely age demographic advert that was.
@Ravix Xbox ain’t doing ads Chief
100% true.
The amount of games releasing every week is staggering and with the amount of experiences from 1st, 2nd and 3rd parties, you’d be dumb not to own one.
I would agree with if they would let me cash out my points. For now I disagree as a sign of protest. Ps stars still don't have the store credit options.

Not for me. The backlog will never die. Most games are cross-gen and modern AAA single-player games feel more and more boring. I'll wait a few more years.
At the rate gaming is going, buy a PC now and it'll play everything you want for decades until the traces oxidize and crumble. It won't play the latest games at the highest spec, but those games will also have potato mode support.
Wait, Sony just put out a "BUY A PS5 CONSOLE RIGHT NOW!!" ad and didn't mention the Pro? But why? 🤷♂️
Also, this is more of a Helldivers II ad than a PS5 ad, just sayin'.
@Haruki_NLI " late stage capitalism "
My problem w/ that phrase is that most people are probably reading it like it's a good thing, like it's morphed into a butterfly, greed is good, and not how it was originally intended. Though I suppose some people read my "the class was is over" comment the same way. Which is why I always end it, "we lost". 🤑
@NEStalgia " In our opinion, it’s a little odd how this commercial exists to illustrate why you should buy the console, but instead goes on to promote the dozens of optional peripherals you can purchase alongside it instead. "
Sammy's been reading my 4th party comments.😎 Ain't nobody calling it what you said. 😉
Doesn't say much for buying at launch.
Yes, but not for the only 'yes' reason in the poll.
I think now is the time for Sony to show why i did buy my PS5 and why i should get a PS6 in a couple years, bc the current Sony is rapidly losing my trust in them.
The money has been taken out my account for the PRO today. It’s on!
They are right, there's now quite a lot of decent games and ps5 exclusives as well such as Final Fantasy 7 ReBirth, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, Dragon Age Veilguard, Astro Bot, Returnal, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, HellDivers 2, Dragons Dogma 2, Silent Hill 2 all not available on PS4, and of course next year there's Monster Hunter Wilds, Death Stranding 2, GTA 6, Ghost of Yotei, Assassins Creed Shadows etc that are skipping the PS4.
So yeah more than enough reasons to finally get a PS5 for those who haven't yet.
@Ravix 😉 for you BabeStation.
I’m not anti Sony. I love PlayStation. Sometimes a friend of the family needs to tell the truth though. This gen is a joke. Upscaled PS4 gen and that’s the truth.
I’m not saying there aren’t hits but what is the vision? PS5 Pro ain’t it chief. That Mark geezer was David Brent without the gravitas.
Ditch the live service garbage. Make games people care about.
@Jayslow Fully agree, across the PS5 and Switch I don't think I've enjoyed a year as much as this one and there's still some bangers to come like Dragon Quest 3 HD, Lego Horizon, Mario and Luigi Brothership and Fairy Tail 2. Although that might be biased for me as I mainly play JRPG's and this year has been stacked for great JRPG's.
Ps5 is my least played console ever. Make of that what you will. It’s 95% a twitch machine.
Best time to get it was at launch where it was a much better value for $500. You’re paying that for 4 year old hardware now
A stripped rewards program for both PS Stars and Credit holders, lack of great first party exclusives, and a live service push that failed spectacularly.
Yeah, I'm gonna disagree with that one, Sony.
I’d rather get a PS4 and even looked into it a little. The only things that I’m really wanting to try on PS5 that I haven’t played with my brother are Stellar Blade and Infinity Nikki. Aside from those, nothing has really grabbed my attention compared to the numerous releases on PS4…But that’s just me.
I still feel that if I'd not upgraded to a PS5, the only games I would have missed out on are Astro's Playroom and Astro Bot
Hmmm just before the Pro launch and a month before Black Friday is definitely not the best time to buy a PS5
Just picked up a PS5, first PS since the PS2. £340 and loads of first party games to catch up on. Good time for me to buy a PS!
Still doesn't have any exclusive that interests me.
Mind you, nor does Xbox or Nintendo, but maybe that's just me.
Yeah, absolutely not. This generation is the worst one Sony has ever had in terms of output to some degree, but more importantly in terms of fan service and greed driven anti consumer policy. Had I known this was going to be their way, I would have never jumped in day one, nor now.
This is shaping up to be an entirely skippable one, as the majority of the Ps5 native ps studios stuff won't even drop until the end of the generation if it is even native (Ghost of Yotei looks like a Ps4 game). By that time just wait and play it on the ps6 where it will run better or have 2 remakes. By then.
Not to mention you have nearly all of the major third party releases in the last 18 months intentionally releasing unfinished/unoptomized titles in order to help sell a minor and over priced mid gen refresh or at the very least use it as a crutch and manner to essentially have two releases for the same game in a way.
It's the worst time to get a ps5 because now we can see the writing on the wall. I would caution anyone on doing so. At this point play your back catalogue or the majority of current Gen games that are in actuality better running ps4 games, and wait for ps6 or save for a pc.
why is it a good time to buy exactly?
has the price dropped yet? no.
has there been a "system seller calibur game" released? debatable but in my opinion, no.
are things looking bright over the next few months with hotly anticipated releases? no. we don't even know what projects most of sony's 1st party studios are working on, let alone what the potential release YEAR will be for them. we do know that they have a bunch of service games in active development that will likely bomb just as hard as concord though!
the only exception to all of this may be gta 6 but that isn't even a ps5 exclusive and is likely a year away from release
things are rough for sony right now and they have little to no bullet points to entice potential customers to get a ps5 who may be on the fence and/or not impressed with how the first 4 years have gone for the platform. i would know, i'm one such potential customer. had a great time with the ps4 since 2014 and see no reason to throw it by the wayside anytime soon. this is probably the point of no return and i should save my money and invest it into the ps6 instead (if it can deliver what the ps5 couldn't)
The best time to get a console is when you can actually afford it. 🤔
I'm just waiting for GTA 6.
In breaking news, company says now is the best time to buy company's product.
The games aren't the problem, Sony's arrogance is.
I bought a PS5 since 2020, 1 month after launch.
Gave it to my son this year, and didn't feel the need get another.
The first party games I was playing on it are already on PC, or I've played them too much to get into them again.
And first party titles are the main reason I bought at least 1 Playstation console of each generation since way back in 2006 (PS2 slim, PS3 phat, PSP slim, PS4 Pro, PS5). Hell, I still have the PS3 and PS4 Pro, and they still work.
But the way things went with PS5 since launch, getting the next gen is under serious question.
If Sony doesn't make some much needed additions to it's first party portfolio, most likely I'll be skipping the PS6.
Ask me again when they stop releasing games for Ps4
Has been a good year for me for sure - stellar blade, FF7 Rebirth, Unicorn Overlord, Astrobot etc.
The PS5 and switch give me way more than I have time for.
If you’re looking for platform-wide standardization of what is and what is not acceptable trophy criteria, along with the ability to permanently erase games with partially completed trophies from your trophy list, as well as the option to do something as simple as sort them alphabetically instead of the terrible ‘last game you earned a trophy in gets bumped to the top of the list’ method…now is not a good time to get a PlayStation.
Not really as a life long fan personally I feel ripped off this is Playstation's most pathetic generation yet
I mean there definitely isn't a lack of new games, and I never struggle finding something good to play.
But I understand why people are saying lack of software, and I think that's because Sony still hasn't released that killer app for PS5, the must play, must own game. The biggest titles they've released on PS5 have been cross-gen, and on reflection Spider-man 2 was a little disappointing, I still haven't seen anything on the technical level TLOU Part II was, which released over 4 years ago. The fact Sony is keeping their cards close to their chest doesn't help things, as there is not much to look forward to from them in the next year or 2
Nah, when it's cheap years later maybe. This has been my least used Playstation next to the PS3. Not much excites me on it, and most of what's good can be played elsewhere too, so no need for a PS5 to play em.
Maybe if they'd actually brought the price down instead of increasing it would be 🤣😭 got Xbox but thought when they drop abit in price il grab one so can play the the ratchet n clank games but then the pirce went up like wtf 🤣😭😭
Definitely the last choice 😂
Japanese consumers looking at the latest price hike likely disagree.
@LifeGirl biggest failure yes but the worst game of all time? You have seen that pink woman with a gun game yes? Concord is a massive failure granted but there are literally hundreds of worse games out there.
Wow! Now that is a surprising result based strictly on the usual negativity on this website.
72% of people agree or slightly agree that now is the best time. Wow!
So many unhappy ps5 owners. Why don't you all sell them or donate them to people that actually want one but can't afford one etc. It's not sonys worst console generation but it's definitely got the worst community I've seen in a long time.
Yeah I feel a little like I wasted the first 3 years of PS5 on PS4 games. I like my PS5 but I loved my PS4, 3, 2 & Vita. By the end of the gen I'm sure I'll fall back in love but this gen seems more appealing for those who've waited until this point. Also, the PS5 Pro is what the PS5 should've been. I'm getting that day 1.
And here comes the ps5 pro.or wait to buy a ps5 pro instead of a ps5.more PlayStation exclusives sony.word up son
@riceNpea I mean, just talking about recent-ish releases but you can’t play Astro bot, Stellar Blade, Baldur’s Gate 3 or FFVII Rebirth. I am sorry but PS4 is utterly useless atm @Dr_Rocanlover
@Northern_munkey Well said sir, entitlement and internet arrogance certainly has played its part in this generation.
@Northern_munkey Just out of interest what do you think was sonys worst gen? I have to agree with others that this has been by far the worst, there's new hardware releasing next week and i haven't got the slightest bit of interest in it despite being day 1 for everything since ps1 (apart from psvr2, they really s*it the bed on that one )
@Nei As long as you can still play games on it, no system I’d ever really worthless. Not everyone wants to play the newest releases. Hell, I’m looking to get a PS1 this weekend.
Any time is good to buy gaming hardware. With PS5 I have so many games in my library I’m covered till PS6 arrives at least. That said, PS5 Pro is still readily available for pre-order everywhere over here in Poland and I suspect it’s not going to sell nearly as well as Sony is hoping.
Now is the best time for you to buy a PS5.
For Sony, as they need to fill in a $300m black hole in their finances.
In fact, you should buy 4.
@Deljo for me the ps3 was the biggest disappointment personally. It was a powerful machine but was notoriously difficult to get to grips with. The games had some of the worst performing games I've played (dragons dogma, bayonetta etc) and the only reason I bought one was because the xbox 360 just kept red ring of deathing me. Saying that I did enjoy myself with the uncharted games and kill zone 2 and 3. Ultimately I switched to pc gaming for a few years until I bought a ps4 to play friends online with which is probably sonys best gen so far.
Here is a list of current games that are exclusive on PS5 (excluding PS VR2):
For someone who hasn't bought a PS5 do you seriously think the above list makes it compelling enough to get one now, 4 years on and at practically the same price as launch? Everything else on the platform can be played either on PS4 or PC at much higher fidelity along with Xbox titles from day one.
Honestly? If you have a PS4 and don't have a PS5 yet...wait for the PS6! I find the latest generation very disappointing and have already sold my PS5.
Not yet worth buying. Would wait for a bigger sale. I probably won't even use it much now. And if I get a PS5, I'd be playing a PS4 game.
@LavenderShroud yeah, I mean - give me a SNES with Super Metroid or whatever can play PSO and I am good for life but in terms of latest meaningful releases the PS4 hasn’t got us covered
Na not for me, just picked up a 4 pro to replace my broken launch ps4. Thanks.
@Northern_munkey thats interesting, for me the ps3 was such a leap forward with the introduction of hd, bluray, a hard drive and even wireless controllers that it was hard not to be impressed and is kinda the blueprint for what we have now. Actually your right, I'm not really enjoying this gen all that much but it was the ps3 that started it all...🤣
@truerbluer you forgot Stellar Blade and others but yes if I had to get one single piece of gaming hardware, I’d say Ps5 is the best choice atm as you pretty much get everything without having to wait years for ports! And I say this as someone who plays on PC a lot -
If anything, now would be a good time to get a PC. You can play all Xbox exclusives and pretty much all PS exclusives after a while as well.
@Nei You're right Stellar Blade is missing, I got the list off Wikipedia but it seems it was removed off the PS5-only list because of the PC port being announced.
PC waiting for ports is kind of a moot point when PS5 will also be waiting for Xbox ports.
This is the worst Playstation generation. While the Xbox brand is arguably irrelevant - the Playstation 5 still absolutely blows. Compared to its predecessors ?
-Overpriced
-Terrible lack of exclusives
-Terrible lack of original new IPs
-Exclusives releasing on PC making it even harder for me to use my console more
-Driftsense battery eater
-Mediocre UI
-Least impressive generational leap
-Online is still paywalled & more costly
The PS5 is the least Playstation feeling Playstation i’ve ever owned. $ony lost its identity imo.
1.PS3
2.PS2/PS4
3.PS1
4. A trash can
5. PS5
Now would be the best time... to just stick with your PS4.
@Nei That’s true. I definitely agree with you
This highlights perfectly how disappointing this generation has been…
@Deljo The PS3 was legendary , we really had it good that generation; the PS3 & Xbox360 were both amazing consoles that pioneered gaming so much - the libraries were insane , the games were insane, the innovation & online were insane, new experiences & new IPs galore . Rockstar released like FIVE games or more that generation, COD was at its peak , there was so many genres and types of games for everyone & the birth of indies .
i could go on man, it was so good. so many games today benefit from that era alone .
Also want to add that i’ll never get over how ambitious sony was with the initial (fat) PS3 - despite being expensive , it provided soo much that it puts the ps5 pro to shame. the OG PS3 was a cutting edge freak of technology in 2006
The best time to get a PS5 is at launch and I've never looked back. PS6 launch will also be another great time. Thinking about the whole design of the PS5, this is a console you never want to take away from shelves. It's just so elegantly beautiful standing upright.
@nomither6 have to agree with you, infact I've definitely played more ps3 games this year (through emulation) than I have ps5 games. Says it all really
Returnal, Ratchet and clank and miles morales, gow, are still very expensive.
If you are a gamer , yes its time, But still this generation is not worth it.
@zhoont That's like saying Xbox Series was the best launch line up ever for a console because of backwards compatibility, despite not actually having any launch games
@x3King84 Indeed this gen is a joke, and the people who will refute this claim probably started gaming during the PS360 era, maybe even PS4
The generation has in general been very good, some highs and a few lows, and i wouldn't moan about a lack of games overall, but I would the lack of Sony 1st party exclusives, particularly in the last couple of years.
The generation as a whole has been good, and im looking forwards to Pro, but Sony have not been too impressive at all of late and really need to take a long hard look at what gained them their customers.
@TrickyDicky99
On the whole this gen has been pretty good so far imo, not perfect, but pretty good overall, and I started gaming on the Speccy +2, and have been ever since.
@LifeGirl Such nonsensical logic. Concord existing doesn't negate all the other amazing games being amazing.
Just like how an amazing album can he amazing even if there's one dud track on it.
If Sony exclusively listened to the PS comments then they would be in way more trouble then said commenters would have you believe.
@nomither6 Ironic that you call the PS5 "overpriced", then peg the PS3 as the best PlayStation. That was way more expensive than the PS5 at launch and that's before adjusting for inflation.
And the only reason they got the price down is because they stripped out a load of features.
@UNCLDNS why would they wait for a console that doesn't even exist at all , and we have no idea when its coming out it could be till 2028/2029 when that comes out.
@nomither6 i love my ps3 , but its easy to forget it was the least selling sony console of all time. it was actually the worst console to develop for as 3rd party games went. and people comment how remasters on the ps5 , but ps3 had just as many or more hd collections of ps2 games.
@MrPeanutbutterz true it was expensive but at the time a decent bluray player alone was starting at £500 so it was a bit of a bargin for movie fans.
@twitchtvpat No offense but why would i care about it being the least selling playstation ? & playstation (up until the PS4) has generally had shoddy ports and the PS2 wasn’t exactly easy to develop for either & was the weakest system of its generation. No console has been perfect yet imo , they’ve all had flaws. & the difference between the PS5 remasters vs the PS3 remasters is that the ps3 actually had its own games & own unique library. The ps5 is seeing remasters of games that are still fairly recent & from a console where the leap is minimal, so much so, that you can be better off just playing the same ps4 game on the ps5 instead. The PS3 wasn’t a remaster console, the PS5 is. Not to mention that the PS3 had “remasters” of its portable counterparts with added trophy support, so i think that’s a bonus and convenient.
& from a strictly games standpoint - whether first party or third party , the PS3 smashes the PS5 tremendously.
@MrPeanutbutterz Ill preface by saying that i ignore inflation & hardly understand how it works but - for 2006 & considering how much the original PS3 offered at that time, i believe the PS3 was worth the asking price. The PS5? hell no.
Should have had the advertisement with:- No mortgage? No children? Earning a decent income? Then the best time to buy a PS5 is now. Or spoil yourself with the PS5 Pro!!
At this point, no. I got my PS5 3 years ago and I just cannot recommend it. I have completely stopped buying my games on PlayStation and exclusively purchase games on PC and Switch. Every games that Sony makes goes to PC now, the price has gone up instead of down, and the the lack of portability is the nail in the coffin for me. I just use my PS5 to play my PS4 games when I do turn it on, but the PS5 will be my last Sony console.
Definitely. Great system, great and huge selection.
No point getting a ps5 now. All the games I have been interest on ps5 are all now on PC minus maybe ff17 rebirth, but we know that is coming. The reason I bought a ps5 was ff16(game was ok, but a let down overall) is now on PC.
@Rich33 You're probably including last gen games with PS5 enhancements though, which is last gen
@nomither6 like i said i loved the ps3 , i still have mine hooked up and play it, but from your comment you act like the ps5 is already done with , but its not even half way over. theres still plenty of great games coming.
Why is this such a bad gen software wise according to so many? So many games have come out these past few years, its almost an accomplishment to not have a backlog by now.
Or do people here only play exclusives?
In that case, this year Playstation has 9 exclusives. Is that really so bad?
Or is it that you only play first party games?
The way i see it, there have been games coming out yearly in a staggering pace, that i can hardly keep up with. My backlog is immense, i cannot play all these games that are coming out. It seems like there are hundreds of games coming out each year.
I guess you guys either have way more free time than me and can play all these games. Or y’all standards are super high in what ure looking for in gaming.
If you have anything like Black Friday that would be the best time!. Its also the best time to pick up physical games on deep discount.
To follow up on my post. This is just a few of the games that came out this year, or are still gonna come out. In no way is this a comprehensive list, just a glimpse of what a typical year in gaming delivers
Astro bot
Elden ring shadow of the erdtree
Metaphor refantazio
Final fantasy rebirth
Dave the diver
Destiny the final shape
Balatro
Last of us 2 extra mode
Tekken 8
Like a dragon
Animal well
Hi fi rush
Unicorn overlord
Prince of persia the lost crown
Silent hill 2
Dragons dogma 2
Call of duty black ops 6
Thank goodness youre here
Dragon age: the veilguard
Neva
Helldivers 2
Rise of the ronin
Stellar blade
Ultros
Pacific drive
Granblue fantasy relink
Zenless zone zero
Sea of thieves
Mlb the show
Fc 25
F1
NBA 2k
Slitterhead
Lego horizons adventure
Obviously theres so much more, but these are the more notable ones. Thats almost 3 games coming out each month. Some critically acclaimed. Both from existing franchises and new ip. From all types of genres and from AAA to indie. Some of these take 50+ hrs to complete.
Really, i cant find the time, i automatically have a backlog. And that is just this year. I still have a backlog from the last 3 years. It seems to me that whatever console you have, but in this case if you have a PS5, you're eating good. So how does it suck?
Baldur's Gate 3 was out last year so unless you own a PC then its been worth owning a PS5 for at least a year.
@Northern_munkey as observations go, this one is 100% spot on. Who would have thought as technology improves, people become more miserable and entitled. Maybe that's the real Moore's Law.
Actually it's the worst time to get a new console. Nintendo will likely launch a console in 2025 and both Sony and Microsoft will release new consoles in a two or three years so it almost better to wait until the next generation arrives. Even with the minor improvements for the ps5 pro, most gamers are better off waiting for the ps6.
